This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Another one bites the dust

The Marquis of Granby near Sunniside, is no longer presenting jazz on Thursday nights. Last Thursday saw the final session by the Maine Street Jazzmen.
Refurbishment, new management and an audience that weren't spending enough over the bar combined to make this an unsustainable gig.
The Marquis was home to the River City Jazzmen for many years, followed by the Vieux Carré Jazzmen and, for the past few years, the Maine Street Jazzmen. Sadly no more.
It's all very well nursing a half of beer during the interval at a concert hall but a pub needs plenty cash coming in over the bar in these difficult times.
I sympathise with the band but can also see it from the publican's point of view.

They'll still have rock bands at w-ends I'm sure. That's what brings in customers!

Sad to say, the Tyneside jazzers have failed to realise over the years that watching a half pint get warm over the night does not pay for the band. Most "jazz clubs" throughout the U.K. are now charging £8 - £10 for a night of good jazz and the also-rans are playing in pubs for a few pints of beer.
We are in an era of diminishing interest in trad / Dixieland music, so if those of us "mouldy figs" who want to carry on enjoying live jazz we have to be prepared to pay for it.

In my playing days the band used to drink more than the audience. The music was fantastic - or so we thought until someone brought a tape recorder along!

In its day the Marquis of Granby was hugely popular for its excellent pub grub and real ales. So were countless others in the area which no longer exist. Many have been demolished. Pubs and music venues are transitory but jazz in all its forms will continue.
