They'll still have rock bands at w-ends I'm sure. That's what brings in customers!
Sad to say, the Tyneside jazzers have failed to realise over the years that watching a half pint get warm over the night does not pay for the band. Most "jazz clubs" throughout the U.K. are now charging £8 - £10 for a night of good jazz and the also-rans are playing in pubs for a few pints of beer.
We are in an era of diminishing interest in trad / Dixieland music, so if those of us "mouldy figs" who want to carry on enjoying live jazz we have to be prepared to pay for it.
In my playing days the band used to drink more than the audience. The music was fantastic - or so we thought until someone brought a tape recorder along!
In its day the Marquis of Granby was hugely popular for its excellent pub grub and real ales. So were countless others in the area which no longer exist. Many have been demolished. Pubs and music venues are transitory but jazz in all its forms will continue.
