A new release by Chick Corea is an event not to be overlooked. When it also features Tim Garland then the interest is doubled for those of us in the north east who have a special affection for Tim due to his long association with the area (One time Director of Music at Newcastle Uni, various collaborations with Northern Sinfonia and the delightful quirkiness of living in a lighthouse at Whitley Bay) and, of course, his instrumental and compositional skills.
Corea and Garland have worked together on many occasions and this surely ranks with the best. Corea, needless to say, is a delight on piano, soloing or filling, he's always where he's needed. If I personally prefer his keyboard work to his synthesizing that is just my view.If you listen to the piano accompaniment to Mrs Corea singing Outside of Space and then listen to Pledge For Peace you may see what I mean. The latter track has Stanley Clarke on bass and Ravi Coltrane on tenor in a tribute to Ravi's old man John.
Royalty has nothing to do with babies but is a tribute to drummer Roy Haynes (drummer Gilmore is Haynes' grandson) Galaxy 32 Star 4 suggests Corea may be seeking to move out of town - way out of town...
He says "The idea of life outside of Earth has always inspired me to envision a new and better existence. I consider what we have here and now on this planet as something less than the pinnacle of existence. I like to imagine what could be created in an ideal culture in a new world where the creative imagination is considered the most valuable possession one could have."
Amen to that brother.
