Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Aruan Ortiz/Michael Janisch Quintet - Banned in London.

Greg Osby (alt); Raynald Colom (tpt); Aruan Ortiz (pno); Michael Janisch (bs); Rudy Royston (dms).
(Review by Lance).
Since settling in England, Janisch has been involved in many diverse projects - indeed Ubiquity could be his middle name!
Recorded live at Pizza Express during the 2011 London Jazz Festival Banned in London ranks alongside anything I've heard him put on disc.
Greg Osby ranks high among alto players and his solos here tell you why. Long, sinuous, swooping lines that flow seemingly endlessly no clichéd player he. Likewise French born  Barcelona based, trumpeter Colom - a new name to me - is equally outstanding. The album notes describe his music as being firmly rooted in Flamenco. Maybe, his fat, round tone does have echoes of the bullring and the fiesta as well an inherent jazz feeling. Listen to him on Monk's most rhapsodic composition Ask Me Now. Pianist Ortiz, Cuban born co-leader with Janisch of the quintet, displays his classical training with some amazing flights of fancy that many a lesser pianist would class as impossible!
Janisch himself is a tower of strength, as he always is, providing the harmonic core and, as I've said elsewhere, some of the most melodic bass playing in jazz.
Rudy Royston is perhaps at times over recorded but not enough to be obtrusive and it does let us know what an imaginative driving force he is behind the soloists.
The publicity says this was "One of the most talked about gigs at the 2011 London Jazz Festival" and, for once I believe it!
CD Asuan Ortiz/Michael Janisch Quintet - Banned in London. is currently available on Whirlwind Records.
