This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) I'm surprised no others have commented. It depends on what you mean by 'Pop music'. If you refer to 'light' pop in the charts, it appears worse because the rubbish hasn't had a chance to be filtered out and forgotten, which happens over time. If you mean any rock etc. it can't be true, think of wonderful stuff such as Dylan, progressive rock, punk, Joni Mitchell etc, some of which jazzers are singing now. Anyway I don't think science can prove this sort of thing. It's the sons and daughters of jazz musicians who are composing some of the popular music now.

I think artists such as Dylan, Mitchell hardly qualify as examples. In their most creative days they were still quite near the top of the downward road to musical perdition. As regards Punk it horrifies me that time has given it an aura of respectability and acceptance just as I'm sure it horrifies the original punks themselves.
I'll go along with science on this one.

Lance, I was hoping to start others commenting when I put my oar in about science and pop music, but it hasn't happened yet. I still don't think science can prove anything as it's about subjective taste and social conditions surrounding music as well. No doubt the scientists wouldn't like minimilist music either, as they wouldn't understand what the composer was trying to do.
