Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Budtones @ Hoochie.

Stu Findon (ten), Fiona Littlewood (ten/vcl):; Harley Johnson (keys); Tim Knowles (gtr); Jim Crinson (bs); Eric Stutt (dms).
(Review by Lance.)
There is something about a two tenor front-line that grabs me. Tubby and Ronnie with the Couriers, Zoot and Al, Dex and Wardell, Sonny and Gene - the list goes on and tonight, Fiona and Stu added their names to the roll of honour, Plus, of course, Fiona also sings rather well giving her a head start on the others.
The band went down well tonight at Hoochie - almost as well as the 2 for 1 cocktails. Even John Taylor had a couple of Polish Mules! Less adventurous, I stuck with London Pride which was handed down to me at frequent intervals!
Oliver Nelson's The Message got the show on the road and it was a good start. The contrast between Fi and Stu is great both offering differing styles. Stu is the hard-blowing bebopper whilst Fiona reaches for the lyrical linear approach. Nice to hear Harley again - its been awhile and it will be awhile longer before I hear him again as, along with guitarist Tim, he's off to Leeds Uni where I'm sure they will both add to the already vibrant young jazz scene in that city.
Straight No Chaser featured Fi on voice in unison with Stu on tenor. On Green Dolphin St., You Go To My Head, were fine but I did have reservations over My Funny Valentine sung over a heavy rock rhythm. It didn't cut it for me but John T loved it - perhaps I should have been riding the Polish Mules!.
The second set included:  Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love,  Blues For Alice, California Soul, Secret Love,  Midnight Voyage, Corcovado and  Put A Lyd On It this latter tune a Stu original and the spelling is his.
It was a good night, a reasonable crowd and a swinging band. Let's hope they find good replacements for Harley and Tim. Needless to say, Eric and Jim made for a rock solid rhythm section driving the others relentlessly along.
