This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Derek Smith - piano export

There was Marian Page (McPartland), George Shearing, Ralph Sharon, Dill Jones and Derek Smith. All British pianists who emigrated to The States. We know about the first four but what is Derek Smith doing these days?
Jon-Erik Kelso has posted a Kenny Davern video with Derek on piano which has prompted the question. I guess he's 81 now.

I recently bought, second hand, a Derek Smith CD 'Dark Eyes' on the Prestige label (released 1983) with the great George Duvivier on double bass and Gus Johnson on drums. Take the A Train, Misty and Lover Come Back to Me are but a few of the swinging standards played with brio not dissimilar in approach to Oscar Peterson. I see that Smith celebrated his birthday last Friday (August 17)

Have just returned home to England after a wonderful time visiting Uncle Derek in New Jersey. He is still playing and publishing great stuff. I will let him know you are asking about him.
