I caught two jazz related items on radio 4 quite by chance, so blog readers may be interested in catching the items via the radio 4 website, available any time this week (4th to 10th Oct). On Monday there was an Item in the series ‘History of the World in 100 Objects’. This concerned a West African drum which is in the collection of the British Museum. This drum was linked to the Slave Trade, which in turn, apparently, had an influence on the development of jazz. The item lasts only 15 minutes.
On the Tuesday edition of Woman’s Hour, there was an interview with the American jazz singer Sheila Jordan. People may remember that she did a masterclass at the Sage as part of the 2009 Jazz Festival. She talked about her early life in poverty, and her alcoholism. She sang in the studio, which isn’t the easiest of venues.
