This was the Festival's Take Five - 23 concerts + 100 performers and 5 stages. Originally planned for the unfortunate Town Hall the event(s) were miraculously transported overnight to the Lockerbie Academy - the town's major seat of learning.
And indeed there was much learning to be done from the class acts that were on show.
After dropping in on a cross-section I eventually settled comfortably in the 'Jazz Café where the Ladies of Jazz were billed. In actual fact there were only 2 of the 3 ladies present but both of them were impressive.
Sue McHugh opened up the 'scatting' with Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and continued with That Old Feeling, Falling in Love With Someone, I Just Dropped By To Say Hello and Them There Eyes. This latter tune was an interesting re-working of the melody.
Angie King followed with Close Your Eyes, I've Grown Accustomed To His Face, So Nice To Come Home To, Skylark and So Nice. A new name to me but Angie is definitely one to look out for in the ever increasing number of female jazz divas appearing seemingly from 'Out of Nowhere'.
Just as I was preparing to leave who should I bump into but Herbie Hudson of Maine Street Jazzmen fame. It seems as though Roy Williams had arrived in Lockerbie with only half a trombone - he'd left the slide in London (as one does) and Herbie had provided Roy with his own instrument - of which I am now the custodian having agreed to transport it back to England.
