Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Angie King/Roy Williams - Somerton House Hotel Lockerbie Jazz Festival Sunday Afternoon Oct 3.

Angie King (vcl), Roy Williams (tmb), Tom Finlay (pno), Brian Shiels (bs).
I was pleased to have the opportunity to hear Angie again, particularly as the gig was at the same hotel I was staying at and, as Roy was using Herbie's trombone, it made it easy for me to collect the horn afterwards.
Looking good, Angie opened up with I Thought About You and followed it up with When Sunny Gets Blue. Two great songs sung impeccably and with that touch of class that separates the excellent from the merely very good. Angie's pitching never falters and her phrasing is her own.
I talked about spine-tingling moments in Carol Kidd's gig, well, Angie had her own in A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. Other numbers in her set included I've Got The World on a String, Skylark, Love Is Here to Stay and several more.
Knocked out!
Roy, coming to terms with a strange instrument, nevertheless sounded good on his solo features Nobody Else But Me (Jerome Kern's swansong) and For You, For me, Forever More.
On piano, Tom Finlay played some nice solos and Brian Shiels - who seemed to pop up everywhere - is an impressive bassist.
It was a nice laid back afternoon by four great musicians.
Lance.
