Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Alan Barnes, Ken Peplowski Group. Dryfesdale Hotel - Lockerbie Jazz Festival Sunday Afternoon Oct 3

Alan Barnes/Ken Peplowski (reeds), Paul Harrison (pno), Mario Caribe (bs), Doug Hough (dms).
After collecting Herbie's trombone from Roy (Roy promises to buy you the biggest drink ever for saving his life Herbie) I dashed up the road to catch Barnes and Peplowski arriving towards the end of the first set.
They were blowing 9:20 Special - two tenors and rhythm Phew! This one jumped! Interesting to compare the two styles; Ken, light and airy, Alan, bloody, bold and resolute - the rapier versus the sabre.
Honours even I guess.
Some gems in the second set. Monk's Ask Me Now and the Clark Terry/Jimmy Hamilton variation on Perdido. More good piano from Harrison, Mario Caribe excelling once more on bass (he was with Carol on the opening night) whilst the ubiquitous Doug Hough booted them along.
More humour from out front by 'the boys' this was a grand way to end a fantastic festival - if only the organisers could have worked their magic on the weather!
Lance.
PS: There was so much going on throughout the Festival that I couldn't catch it all so apologies to those who I missed out.
