Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Alan Barnes/Ken Peplowski Septet - Queen's Hotel Lockerbie Jazz Festival Saturday Evening Oct 2.

Alan Barnes, Ken Peplowski (reeds), Steve Fishwick (tpt), Roy Williams (tmb), Paul Harrison (pno), Brian Shiels (bs), Doug Hough (dms).
Billed as 'A Tribute To Johnny Hodges' this was a gem of a session and popular too. Long before the opening number extra tables and chairs were being brought in to accommodate the enthusiasts eager to hear this star-studded line-up.
Paul Harrison played an explosive piano intro to Hi-ya that had the front-liners up and running with as fine a mainstream sound as I've heard for many a year. These guys are as good as it gets in the idiom (and beyond) with powerful solos to complement the fine arrangements - mainly, I guess, by Alan.
The rhythm section too - possibly lesser known outside of Scotland - they kept the horns up to speed and, in Harrison, have a pianist who can hold his head up high in any company as, indeed, can Messrs Shiels and Hough.
The music swung non-stop apart from those delightful cross-patter moments between the two leaders. These two guys are funnier than Morecombe and Wise, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello and Martin and Lewis put together!
The joint, like The Jeep was Jumpin'.
Lance.
