Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Cool Breeze - Robin Hood, Jarrow

Ian Parkinson (gtr/bs/vcl), Carl Defoe (keys), George Richardson (dms) + various.
Is this a jazz gig? Is it a rock gig? Is it a sing-a-long gig?
The answer to all three questions is 'yes' it is all of them and more.
Jazz in Jarrow? who would have thought it! Paradoxically, the last time I heard jazz in Jarrow was at this same venue maybe 30 years ago - Waso and Sammy Rimmington!
Tonight was a fun night with 'Parky' singing such beauts as Have You Met Miss Jones, Kick Out of You, Ipanema, Sweet Lorraine, Come Fly With Me, Tramp and other Gasbook classics alongside Dire Straits and The Eagles.
My old mate George on drums kicked things along and, it has to be said, George is a powerhouse percussionist. (photo from 30 years ago.)
Carl played some good stuff on keyboards and backed the singers who materialised from the floor including two 'cheeky little strutters' doing Amy Winehouse and doing her good!
John McKenna sat in on drums, much real ale was supped, and bossman Jess gave out with his own Sinatra shot - Got You Under My Skin. I'd booked a taxi for half eleven - should have left it later.
Get there next week!
Lance.
