Album review: Betty Accorsi Quartet - Growing Roots

Elisabetta Accorsi (soprano sax/voice); Daniel Hewson (piano); Andy Hamill (basses); Scott MacDonald (drums).

Accorsi studied in Milan at the Conservatoire Giuseppe Verdi before moving to London's Trinity Laban (PGDip) before completing an Mmus at Goldsmith's.

Accorsi is an accomplished and inventive saxophonist who also sings rather well. However, going on the evidence of this and her 2020 debut album The Cutty Sark Suite, her true forté  may be as an impressionist jazz composer. This in no way denigrates her instrumental or vocal skills. As a sax player she can hold her own alongside the best, there's some wild soprano playing on both of her albums that could well point one or two of the current whiz kids in the direction of the exit whilst the vocal moments have a poetic charm about them.

Apart from being a fine blended whisky, Cutty Sark was, long before that, an English clipper operating the tea trade route between London and China over a period of 85 years before being retired in 1954. She, the ship, is now dry-docked in Greenwich and is still a big tourist attraction.

Accorsi spent a year living in Greenwich during which time she formed an attachment to the "local monument" which led her to compose and perform the music we hear here. It's an impressive work with each movement representing a stage of the return journey from Shanghai via Indonesia, South Africa and, finally, London.
