The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Geoffrey Smith (1943 - April 2, 2026)

If BBC Radio 3's Jazz Record Requests had been a sandwich former presenter Geoffrey Smith, who sadly passed away on April 2, would have been the very satisfying filling.

Smith inherited the position with the BBC in 1991 following the death of Peter Clayton and held it until 2012 when Alyn Shipton took over.

That same year he continued on Radio 3 with Geoffrey Smith's Jazz in which his vast knowledge and broad tastes attracted many listeners to the show which ran until 2019.

American born, upon taking up UK residency he soon became a key figure in the field of musical literature writing, arguably, the definitive books on, among others, the Savoy Operas and Stéphane Grappelli as well as contributing to various newspapers and magazines.

Sadly missed, not only by those who knew him but also by the many jazz fans who tuned in to his radio programmes. Lance
