Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Press release: STRICTLY SMOKIN' BIG BAND plus, direct from Germany IKS BIG BAND

Gosforth Civic Theatre, Newcastle 7.30pm doors | 8pm music

We're very excited to welcome Immanuel-Kant-Schule Big Band from Rüsselsheim over to Newcastle for a very special trans-European big band celebration at Gosforth Civic Theatre on 5th June, culminating in a double big band extravaganza...

Founded in 1986 and celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the IKS Big Band has earned a reputation in Germany as one of the leading large jazz ensembles in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main area.

Having worked with internationally acclaimed jazz artists including James Moody, Mike Smith, Scott Hamilton, and many more, IKSBB has developed a powerful swing sound. Under the direction of Hessian Jazz Award winner Horst Aussenhof, and featuring their vocal quartet, the “Horstinetten,” the ensemble combines precision, bold brass and a commitment to the energy of the big band tradition.

The evening will feature a full set from each band, starting with SSBB. Lots to look forward to: from driving Basie-inspired swing to contemporary big band compositions.

Two full jazz orchestras on one stage.
Twice the brass.
Twice the rhythm section.
A wall of sound rarely heard live.

Nope - we've got no clue how we're going to fit on the stage either!!

Join us on Friday 5th June to find out how we manage it, for what promises to be an unmissable night of power and pure big band energy.
