Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Annie & the Caldwells @ The Cluny, Newcastle - Feb. 1

Annie Brown Caldwell (vocals); Deborah Caldwell (vocals); Anjessica Caldwell (vocals); Willie Joe Caldwell Sr. (guitar); Willie Caldwell Jr. (bass); Abel Aquirius Caldwell (drums)

The Globe on a Sunday evening usually wins out. However, occasionally there is an unfortunate clash with a gig elsewhere. This evening was one such occasion. The Cluny, down in the Ouseburn, opened its doors to a gospel/soul musical family all the way from West Point, Mississippi. Touring the UK, Annie & the Caldwells were on a mission.

Annie Caldwell sat for the duration, her daughter Deborah Caldwell standing to her right, to her left, daughter Anjessica Caldwell. The daughters were more, much more than backing singers. The three women shared the vocals, their sheer power shaking the foundations here on Lime Street. Sitting behind Annie, Deborah and Anjessica were Mr Caldwell and sons. Father Willie Joe Caldwell playing guitar (Mississippi swamp, hill country, soul-blues and more), sons Willie Caldwell Jr., bass guitar, and Abel Aquirius Caldwell, a powerhouse among powerhouse drummers.

The family's Can't Lose My Soul album would feature throughout a one hour performance. The album's title track, plus I Made ItDon't You Hear Me Calling?I'm Going to Rise, all sanctifying stuff, the onside audience dancing and bopping the night away. Whatever Annie sang, they believed it! A churchgoing family, the music was in service to their faith.

Repetition played a key part - 'Dear Lord', 'Jesus', 'Hallelujah' etc. Yes, the Caldwells were on a mission. The Cluny's audience lapped it up, faith or no faith. As Mr Caldwell's rhythm section continued to work like Trojans, Annie rose up and, cane in hand for support, made her way off stage. Mission accomplished.

Earlier, Edinburgh-based James Emmanuel played a half hour set.

James Emmanuel (vocals) & band

Last year James Emmanuel was busking on the streets of Edinburgh. A few months later Emmanuel was singing on stage at the Royal Albert Hall. Now, in early 2026, Emmanuel and his five piece band is on tour. Allotted a mere thirty minutes, Emmanuel knew he couldn't hang around. A huge voice,  'presence', a killing band, Bothers and Sisters (reaching out to the audience), A Little Rain and, a world premiere performance, right here in Newcastle, of So Good to Me. Emmanuel made a big impression, in an instant increasing his fan club with one hundred plus new recruits this Sunday evening. Russell
