Bebop Spoken There

Warne Marsh: "At some point, you have to be prepared to create—to perform. It's vital, man, if we're talking about jazz, the original jazz, the performing art. It fulfils its meaning only when you play it live in front of an audience." DownBeat January 1983.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sarah Spencer's Transatlantic Band @ Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club - Dec. 6

Sarah Spencer (tenor sax, vocals); 'Magic' Mike Henry (cornet); Rob Pearce (trombone); Jesper Capion Larsen (clarinet); Rachel Hayward (banjo, guitar); Jim Swinnerton (string bass); Graham Smith (drums)

Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club's final concert of the year featured Sarah Spencer's Transatlantic Band. Half an hour before the first set, DNOJC's loyal supporters were taking their seats, eagerly looking forward to two sets (2 x 60 mins) of good old New Orleans jazz. Spencer's band comprised the usual suspects plus special guest Jesper Capion Larsen.

From the off the seven piece outfit made quite a racket. Bold, brassy, Spencer anything but a shrinking violet. Rob Pearce's Jim Robinson-style trombone, Rachel Hayward's terrific work on banjo and guitar, and Jim Swinnerton's robust string bass playing took it to the audience. Absolutely, Positively (Spencer singing), L'il Liza Jane (all in the ensemble exercising their tonsils), Jabbo Smith's I Got the Stinger and a clarinet feature for Larsen playing St Phillip Street Breakdown were played with gusto to an appreciative audience.

Beautiful Ohio (a state anthem), an uptempo Lead Me, Saviour, an equally brisk Give Me Your Telephone NumberThere's a House in Harlem for Sale (Spencer pointing to Red Allen's recording of the Arlen-Van Heusen number) and more, this afternoon's DNOJC session brought the curtain down on another successful year of New Orleans jazz at St Augustine's Parish Centre. The 2026 programme begins on Saturday 7th February. The Big Easy will be in town, 12:30pm start. Russell
