This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Grant Russell Quartet @ the Moor Club, Stockport - Dec. 7

Ed Kainyek (tenor/soprano sax); Richard Harrold (piano); Grant Russell (bass); Luke Flowers (drums)

There was a change in the advertised line up with Ed Kainyek stepping in for Kyran Matthews on tenor and soprano sax. The rest of the band featured leader Grant Russell on bass, Manchester stalwart Luke Flowers on drums and classically trained pianist Richard Harrold who with the HLK Trio has recorded and toured with master percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. 

The band played eight tunes including an original of Grant's called Oscar's Bossa which featured a great arco bass solo by Grant. My favourite tune of the night was Hubbard's Little Sunflower which featured another great solo by Grant. There was a large turnout to hear the band and I think most of us witnessed a great night of jazz.

Next Sunday's gig features the Jim Collins/John Hulme Quintet. Jeff Pritchard.
