Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

JATLP: Emily Masser w. the Dean Stockdale Trio - Sept. 19

© Patti D
Emily Masser (vocals); Dean Stockdale (piano); Andy Champion (bass); Russ Morgan (drums)

Jazz is, as the old adage goes 'the sound of surprise'.  This proved to be the case this lunchtime when Emily Masser opted for only one of the ten tunes listed in the optimistically printed programme. This was Old Devil Moon which unfortunately was undermiked so we didn't get the listening pleasure that was to follow.

Almost Like Being in Love, now that the volume was raised, was more like being in love. A brief scat chorus and solos from piano, bass and drums - this was the real deal.

A swinger of a blast on Gershwin's A Foggy Day had all four going for broke. The only let down for me was the absence of the verse.

East of the Sun had a throwaway feel about it but an uptempo The Man I Love complete with vocalese chorus raised the bar. It needed a change of mood to follow that and it took a beautiful, sensual My One and Only Love to do just that. It sounded as if she was singing from the heart. Dry eyes were at a premium.

One Note Samba isn't just one note. The middle eight contains rather a lot of them and requires mucho dexterity from both voice and fingers, especially if you're singing or playing it as a fast samba.

On the Sunny Side of the Street began with just voice and bass - no one was going to grab their coat and get their hat whilst this was going on.

The enjoyable afternoon at the, as always, sold out Lit & Phil session closed with Oh, Lady be Good with some Ella inspired scatology. A fine singer and a rhythm section to die for. Like 'the lady' they were all good. Lance
