This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sue Ferris on Sunday

Fans of saxophonist Sue Ferris are in for a double treat tomorrow (Sunday Sept. 14). Two gigs and both are not only unmissable but easily doable.

In the afternoon Sue and her baritone sax will be adding depth to the Strictly Smokin' Big Band's centennial tribute to singer Mel Tormé at 1856 Exchange, North Shields, with a recreation of Tormé's Olé Tormé album. As implied by the title this is very much a Latin infused album so expect Sue to do some fluting too.

The concert, which starts at 2:00pm, features Alice Grace taking the Tormé role on vocals.

Fast forward, without breaking any speed limits, to the Globe in Newcastle where Jazz North East are staging a concert by the Sue Ferris Quintet with Sue  on any one (or all) of her musical armoury leading Graham Hardy (trumpet/flugel); Ben Lawrence (piano); Andy Champion (bass); John Bradford (drums).

Doors, 7:00pm, on stage 8:00pm. Lance
