This afternoon, in the Music Studios on Assembly Lane, second year Newcastle University music student Leah Kirk gave her end of year recital. As assessors, tutors, supporters and interested members of the public took their seats (mobiles switched to silent), Leah readied herself to give of her best.
Accompanied by pianist Stu Collingwood, Leah Kirk would sing five songs. Lights dimmed, Ms Kirk opened with Invitation. To your correspondent's ear, Bronislaw Kaper's composition sounded somewhat difficult to sing and sing well. Similarly, Michel Legrand's You Must Believe in Spring. The assessors couldn't have been other than impressed.
The Nancy Wilson-Cannonball Adderley version of Buddy Johnson's Save Your Love for Me and I'm a Woman (Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller) passed muster and to conclude a fine recital, Leah Kirk sang a song not unknown to her tutor, Ruth Lambert, Frank Loesser's Never Will I Marry. Over the next twelve months or so, be sure to catch Leah singing at the Black Swan jam session. Russell
