Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday night @ the Globe: Jamil Sheriff Trio with Nadim Teimoori - March 30

© Ken Drew
Jamil Sheriff (piano); Sam Quintana (bass); Dave Walsh (drums); Nadim Teimoori (tenor sax)

The quartet had played Hexham in the afternoon then hotfooted it down the A69 to the Globe for an evening session.

Dave Sayer has already reviewed the band's Hexham gig (see previous post) and, as  the evening's setlist was identical to that  played earlier and, as I am in total accord with Dave's pertinent observations, it leaves me with little to add.

There are however, other observations to make regarding this session one being the damage to the first floor and the confirmation of the structural repair needed meaning that events scheduled for the upper room such as Wednesday's  weekly Take it to the Bridge sessions are cancelled until further notice. This was said to have been caused by a party of punks pogo-dancing somewhat over enthusiastically.

Fortunately it is now a punk free zone so there was no fear of the ceiling coming down.

As for the music it was played without a safety net by four top class musicians. All originals by Sheriff with distinct themes ranging from Ilkley Moor to Ukraine. As well as composing and playing superb piano Jamil also wrote some poetry relevant to the music. The poems were okay but I think they would have benefitted from being read by an actor or, alternatively, to have had printed sheets on the tables for the audience to absorb the strength and depth of the words.

Teimoori, an agile, light-toned tenor saxist last heard at the Globe with Clark Tracey knows his way around that king of instruments (ok so I'm biased!) better than most. Often during the course of a number he'd come back for a second bite of the cherry.

Quintana, rich and sonorous, on the money when unity was demanded, pursuing a personal path when the free for all fermented.

Walsh producing an amazing 12/8 rhythm that defied the audience, myself included, to replicate with their hands.

All told, an enjoyable evening of contemporary and often emotionally evocative jazz. Lance
