This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. More discoveries: Carmen McRae and Paul J. Gillette

There's a cat charity shop on Clayton St. that I always call in when passing in an attempt to support our furry friends. Today, in exchange for £3 I left with an LP by Carmen McRae and a book by Paul J. Gillette.

I'll deal with the book first. Play Misty For Me is based around the screenplay by Jo Heims and Dean Riesner of the Clint Eastwood movie of the  same name. You may remember Roberta Flack's The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face playing in the background. I read it a long time ago - probably circa 1978 - so, with the passage of time, it will be like reading it anew.

It was also around about this time that I first heard Carmen McRae's 1955 album Torchy!. It was loaned to me by a friend and I was foolish enough to return it. I have fond memories of hearing Carmen at the Flamingo in 1959 - I have a recording from one of her concerts at the Wardour St. venue and have been her number one fan ever since.

Torchy!, however, is even better and her version of Star Eyes is probably the  benchmark for any singer of that great song.
