This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. What's New (feat. Lucky Thompson, Hank Jones)


Lucky Thompson would have been 100-years- old today. He had a big sound to rival that of his contemporaries Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster. I never heard him live but his playing, and this track in particular, on the Milt Jackson album The Jazz Skyline is one of my treasured memories from my days at RAF Manby deep in the heart of Lincolnshire - it was the only jazz album in the billet!

I was very lucky when I was in Berlin during one of the Jazz Festival trips that Melody Maker organised that I saw Lucky live at a small jazz club which had no sign outside but may have been the Evergreen. He played without a mic and I remember he did Walkin which he said was his big hit which he recorded with Miles Davis. The bass player on the gig was the fantastic Aladar Pege. At interval time another Tenor saxman did a set, young guy, really good player but I never got his name unfortunately. Berlin was a great jazz city then and still is from what people say.
