The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Press release: Phil Merriman Trio - The Roots Beneath

The Roots Beneath is the new album from The Phil Merriman Trio, due to be released on June 21. With a foundation grounded in classical technique, Phil Merriman studied jazz piano with John Taylor, steering his focus towards improvisation. Through this experience, Merriman has developed a distinctive compositional style that integrates instrumental contemporary jazz, with bold spontaneity and classical nuances.

Roots Beneath seeks to explore the concept of the graft behind a life well lived which, like a tree’s root system, enables the tree to grow strong yet is primarily unseen. Merriman cites among the album influences the human, lyrical folk melodies of Bartók and the darker harmonic tones of Messiaen, underpinned by shifting rhythms that provide a platform for soul-searching improvisation.

Phil Merriman’s previous work brings together acclaimed classical, world and improvising musicians including Aref Durevsh, Nadim Teimoori, Gustav Clarkson, Raphael Clarkson, Matt Gough, Paul Kimber and Jon Ormston. Merriman’s unique approach is further explored on The Roots Beneath via his trusted trio of exceptionally creative musicians John Williamson on bass and Simon Roth on drums. Merriman’s relationship with drummer Roth and producer of the record Raphael Clarkson spans back to 2006, when they all completed first class music degrees at The University of York.  Roth and Merriman have played as a duo ever since, with Williamson fitting perfectly into the space completing the trio in 2022. The sum of eighteen years of work together combined with a relatively new musical relationship, allows for strong synergy with an original and fresh outlook.

Phil Merriman is the ‘go to’ pianist for a range of successful projects, including work with Polly Gibbons, Germana LaSorsa, Tara Minton, Andrew Small, Matt Gough and the Merton Music Foundation, performing at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, Cadogan Hall, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and The Royal Albert Hall. The soulful side to his talent has led to collaborations with Selina Albright, Shola Ama, CeCe Peniston and Dawn and Noel Robinson.

Album recordings include Integrity Music's 'Songs from the Soil; Raph Clarkson’s ‘Resolute’, ‘Equal Spirits’, ‘This Is How We Grow’ and ‘Soldiering On’; Tara Minton’s ‘Please Do Not Ignore The Mermaid’ (album Producer); Tim Boniface’s ‘The Infant’ and ‘The Eight Words’; Paul Kimber’s ‘Duos, Duets and Duals’, and ‘Duos’ with John Taylor (unreleased). Phil Merriman’s diverse endeavours as both a performer and producer undoubtedly shine through on this new album.

Album launch at 606 Club, London on Wednesday June 19 LINK.
