Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ed Kainyek Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - June 4

The last time Ed played this venue was on May 7 with the same line-up but on that occasion he played alto sax whereas tonight he was on tenor. Once again John Sandham stepped in to replace the absent Gavin Barras and positioned himself on the right of the bandstand with drummer Tim Franks on the left, Liam Butler-Webb was using a Yamaha keyboard and I liked the fact that he keeps the sound level down so as not to overpower the rest of the band.  


I think Ed was in an experimental mood on this gig as some of the sax sounds were almost avant-garde for want of a better description. His choice of tunes was also surprising and avoided the usual stuff that you hear at jazz clubs in favour of some of the more obscure ones such as Wayne Shorter’s Adam’s Apple and the Grover Washington  number In The Name Of Love. Horace Silver’s Gregory is Here is another tune that I don’t think I’ve heard before.


There was a pretty good turnout for a Tuesday night and it was good to see some of the Sunday night regulars in attendance. Ed covered a lot of ground tonight and there was a request from a member of the audience for a tune that I think was a hit for singer Norah Jones What’ll I Do? which went down well. Ed also delved into the Beatles repertoire with a spirited rendition of Hey Jude which had Liam switching to organ mode. 


All in all, an excellent evening of modern jazz. The next jazz night at the Railway is on June 9 with the Helena Summerfield Quartet. Mike Farmer
