This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Richard Wetherall & Jim Collins @ the Mucky Pup, Wilmslow - June 26

Another duo gig at the Mucky Pup only this time instead of keyboard and bass a tenor saxophone was utilised in the very capable hands of Jim Collins who most jazz fans will know from his many gigs at the Railway in Stockport. Regarding the Railway I had an email recently from my friend Jeff who attended Tuesday night's show informing me of the passing of Ray Ford who had been the driving force behind the live jazz events. Sad news indeed and I hope that the Munch Manship gig on June 30 goes to plan as Richard Wetherall is due to be part of the line-up.


To start the ball rolling Jim decided on a blues, Charlie Parker’s Now’s The Time and Jim’s sound as always is good to hear.  Behind the musicians there was a large- screen TV showing the pre-election debate with Starmer and Sunak going hard at it, but no sound, thank goodness. Still it made for a good talking point between tunes.  The audience was sparse but in no way did it affect the music and I thought that Richard and Jim produced two very interesting sets.
