Once a Fig are a fairly new trio of Rebecka Edlund, Phoebe Harty and Cori Smith who do something really quite magical whether that be to traditional English and Swedish folk songs or their own compositions. Musically the line up is Phoebe on cello, Cori on fiddle and Rebecka on lead vocals and 12 string acoustic guitar but that doesn't do them justice. They're good instrumentalists with wonderful harmonies but I have to say it was Rebecka's vocals that stole the show. More than just a singer she's a wordsmith and soundscape artist. With a terrific range from sweet to harsh (in a very good sense), some of her vocalisations were almost shamanic as she became a different person.
I've seen a few people recently who take
"folk" as nothing more than a starting point but then create a new
experience that challenges and makes something very fresh without ever losing
the heart. I hope Once a Fig will be around for a long time and many more
people get the chance to experience something that is both warmly familiar yet
excitingly new.
