Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

(Press release) Kenny Barron garners a GRAMMY nomination.

New York, NY - Renowned jazz pianist Kenny Barron has garnered a GRAMMY® nomination in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album for his recently released solo album The Source (Artwork Records/ [PIAS]). The 66th GRAMMY® Awards will take place on February 4, 2024.

“Being nominated for a GRAMMY® is, of course, a great honor and maybe the thirteenth time will be my lucky charm. But win or not, I will be forever grateful,” Barron shared in a statement.

Over the course of his illustrious 60-year career, NEA Jazz Master Barron has appeared on hundreds of albums as both a leader and sideman for Ron Carter, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Sheila Jordan, and many more. The Source is a landmark recording for the jazz giant as it is his first solo album in forty years. Recorded at the Théâtre d'Athénée in Paris in July 2022, The Source has been widely praised. “Kenny Barron is so fully present and in his element on ‘The Source,’ you hear head, fingers and heart in true alignment,” commented jazz critic Kevin Whitehead on NPR’s Fresh Air.

This is the jazz legend’s 13th nomination. His most recent nomination, prior to this one, was two years ago for his solo on “Kick Those Feet”, a track from drummer Gerry Gibb’s album Songs For My Father, which earned a nomination in the now retired Best Improvised Solo category. Barron’s last nomination in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category was in 2016 for Book Of Intuition.

Kenny Barron is proud to be nominated alongside Lakecia Benjamin, Pat Metheny, Billy Childs and Adam Blackstone.
