Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Nigel Price Organ Trio @ Queen's Hall, Hexham - Nov. 12

Nigel Price (guitar); Peter Johnstone (organ); Joel Barford (drums)

Nigel Price is midway through an extensive tour of Britain. This Queen's Hall, Hexham concert marked the debut of organist Peter Johnstone, depping at short notice for Ross Stanley. Johnstone met Price and drummer Joel Barford for the first time shortly before they went on stage. A quick run through of some of the material and they were ready to go. How Johnstone, Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year way back in 2010, got his head around the charts is one of the wonders of the jazz world.

The trio's new album (featuring the unavailable Ross Stanley) would feature during two sets of compelling music. Price's Wet & Dry opened the show, and what a show it would be! Eye contact, a smile, a nod, Price and Barford were as one, as for new boy Johnstone, much the same, his new bandmates clearly impressed with his contribution. Another two Price compositions - Hey, Shirley (for Shirley Scott) and Stryke One (that's American guitarist Dave Stryker, a favourite of bandleader Price) - confirmed Price as a composer of note. Kid Gloves (for Pat Martino), a thrilling Night Flight (originally a contrafact of Maiden Voyage) was what Price likes to call a 'burner'. It was that, alright, some seriously hot playing on this one!

You Don't Know Me, written with the late Joey DeFrancesco in mind, hit a funk groove, Joel Barford absolutely immense. Wow! It was almost time to go. Price called his Booze Blues (written the morning after the night before, the night before being spent at a beer festival!), Barford was 'all over it' as Price is fond of saying, as for Johnstone, one would have thought the Glaswegian had been in the band for a couple of years not a mere two hours!

A fantastic gig - it always is when Price is on the stand - and they're back in the region tonight (Thursday) at the Globe on Railway Street in Newcastle. Get down in time for an eight o'clock start. Tomorrow the trio will be across town at the Lit and Phil. It's a one o'clock start, however, it's been sold out for several weeks. Try calling the Lit & Phil to check about possible returns - 0191 232 0192 - you never know, you could hit lucky. Russell
