Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Bill Evans, Live in Copenhagen (1964) - Tales

Bill Evans (piano); Chuck Israels (bass); Larry Bunker (drums)
Bonus track: Bill Evans (piano); Eddie Gomez (bass); Marty Morell (drums)

That intrepid jazz detective Zev Feldman unearthed these eleven tracks in Copenhagen. The first six are from a 1964 Danish Radio broadcast followed by four from TV-City and a 1969 bonus track ('Round Midnight) recorded in Aarhus.

The tunes are familiar and, with the exception of I Didn't Know What Time it Was, have appeared on other albums by the great man. Indeed the four tracks recorded before an audience in the TV studio also appear on the radio broadcast from 15 days earlier (August 10).

This is jazz piano at its finest. With Evans, I've always had the impression that he knew what the song was about. Unlike, say Peterson or Tatum whose prodigious technique often overlooked the emotional content, Evans had the technique but he also had the sensitivity to respect the composer's intent. The explorative nature of My Foolish Heart being a perfect example.

His earlier trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motion has been described as the seminal modern jazz trio making it a hard act to follow for Israels and Bunker. Nevertheless, they succeeded as this album proves.

Evans' third great trio came with the bonus track but that's another story and who's to say that Zev 'Marlowe' Feldman isn't hot on the trail of more hidden gems from the Evans' archives? Lance

LP available Nov. 24. CD available Dec. 1 - Elemental Music 59904445.
