This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Mike Hall Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - July 16

The last time Mike Hall played at the Railway was on June 18 and he was a replacement for Dean Masser who was unable to make it due to flooding issues. On this occasion he brought along another first rate rhythm section and they were given a great selection of tunes to play including the opener which I was unfamiliar with, Cole Porter’s Everything I Love.

Mike likes to explore the bossa nova songbook of Antonio Carlos Jobim and he chose the seldom played number Portrait in Black and White. I first came across this tune when I bought a CD from pianist Eddie Higgins which used the same Jobim composition as the album’s title. I don’t have many trio CDs in my collection but this  in my opinion is one of the best.

It’s a mystery to me how Richard Wetherall gets such a great sound out of the house upright but he does and he also listens hard, inspiring his fellow musicians with a constant flow of ideas. Eryl Roberts and Ben Wilshire were a great team and really hit the groove for me especially on Chittlins Con Carne a tune from that fantastic Kenny Burrell album Midnight Blue.This was an ideal number to start the second set with and Mike managed to evoke the spirit of the much lamented tenorman Stanley Turrentine whilst sounding very up to date.


The final tune was an uptempo Johnny Griffin number Mildew which demonstrated Mike’s ability to get round the rhythm changes and to hold the audience’s attention right up to the last note. There is no jazz on Tuesday 18 at the Railway. The next jazz event is Sunday July 23 with the Ben Crosland Quartet.
