Graham Hardy has got the band back on the road. Lockdown hit hard and it's only in the last few weeks that the Northern Monkeys have once again been let Loose in the Banana Patch. The Gala's audience didn't bargain for Hardy's troop coming at them from all sides - trumpet through one door, trombone through another, braying sousaphone out in the corridor, snare and bass drums rattling a few cages.
Five compositions by band leader Hardy (plus two arrangements by the Head Monkey) and two or three timeless numbers, the NMBB's varied set list held broad appeal. The musicianship of the highest order, solos pinged around the frontline horns, buoyed by the pulsating rhythm section. Water of Tyne opened with brass band solemnity, the audience waiting with baited breath for the flick-of-a-switch to take us to the streets of N'Awlins.
The NMBB invited Ferg Kilsby to join the party. The young Tyne Valley based trumpeter stood toe-to-toe with Head Monkey Hardy on High on Life. Professor Longhair's Goin' to Mardi Gras closed the show and, here's a first, Graham Hardy sang! Think Dr John, that's where GH was coming from. Excellent, more please, Graham! Russell
