Not the Steve Oakes Quartet @ The Railway, Stockport – Sept. 7

Ed Kainyek (tenor sax); Freddy Garner (piano); Gavin Barras (bass); Tim Franks (drums)

Unfortunately, due to illness, Steve Oakes could not appear and also the featured guest Jim Collins on tenor sax was a no-show for the same reason. However, local pianist Freddy Garner was called upon to fill in for Oakes and saxman Ed Kainyak was on hand to play a major part in the proceedings. Tim Franks was on drums and I was pleased to see Gavin Barras was there with his bass.

All these musicians have played together on many occasions so it was just a question of deciding what tunes to play and at 9:00 pm the concert commenced. The opening number was that well known theme by Bronislaw Capers, On Green Dolphin Street.

Ed played his Yamaha tenor on all the tunes and has a sound that made me think of Teddy Edwards - a great somewhat under-appreciated saxist that I’ve been listening to recently. Freddy Garner is always a treat to hear and he really excelled on Kenny Barron’s Voyage.  Gavin Barras gets a wonderful tone on bass and Tim Franks deserves a mention for keeping it all together.

The next show at the Railway is the Suzanne Fonseca Quartet on Sept. 12 – Mike Farmer

On Green Dolphin Street; You and the Night And The Music; Anthropology; Nearness of You; Blues for Woody; Off the Wagon; Blue Skies; Afternoon in Paris; Angel Eyes; Voyage; I Only Have Eyes For You; I Mean You.
