Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Adrian Cox revisits Richard Bennett's Thriller Rag - September 12

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals)

Adrian Cox conducted today's Sunday Service from a conservatory somewhere en route to Tyneside.Way back in 2000, at the age of fifteen (!!!), our clarinetist made his first recording as a sideman with Richard Bennett's New Orleans Jazz Band, and today's live stream gig revisited the album, Thriller Rag (Lake Records LACD139). Something like eighty fans were online to listen to Adrian play clarinet and sing a selection of familiar tunes and recount numerous stories of his time on the road with Bennett.

Make sure you learn your melodies was Richard Bennett's sage advice to the young A Cox. It seems our host took onboard his band leader's words: tune after tune Adrian rattled off melodies and lyrics, no problem at all. Thriller Rag opened the show swiftly followed by Bogalusa StrutI Get the Blues When it Rains and more. Down Among the Sheltering Palms (perhaps the tune of the day) brought us almost to the two o'clock finish. A few parish notices (next week's Sunday Service features our host Adrian and his mate, the brilliant pianist Joe Webb!) then out on Panama.

Adrian has many strings to his bow and this evening he'll be on stage at Newcastle's o2 Academy with Buster Bloodvessel's Bad Manners! Russell
