Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday Service with Adrian Cox & Will Barry - Dec. 13

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals); Will Barry (piano)

Another Sunday, another Sunday Service. In the jazz pulpit as usual, Adrian Cox, assisted in his missionary work this week by Kansas Smitty's Will Barry. As Toulouse Lautrec watched on (see photo), the boys, in a Benny Goodman-Teddy Wilson vein, got things under way with Jeepers Creepers.  And on to Ellington...Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me. Great, just sit back and enjoy it. Every Time We Say Goodbye is a tune Adrian knows, of course, but he'd never played it. There's a first time for everything, and today was the day - clarinet and vocals. The Sunday Service sure does deliver the goods!
Under a Blanket of Blue (Ella and Louis) for the second week running. Last Sunday at Gun Hill Studios Adrian played it with Joe Stilgoe, today with Will Barry (Adrian singing). More Benny G, 'the monster' said Adrian, confessing that it took him some time to get into BG. Slipped Disc didn't hurt, great stuff! Jelly Roll...Winin' Boy Blues, vocals and playful clarinet courtesy of AC., stately piano courtesy of WB. Time to pick up the tempo...Get Happy referencing BG's hot take. Time for two more...Adrian liked Will's recent Kansas Smitty's gig with Will Sach  and asked him if they could play Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen. Of course they could, breathy clarinet, respectful piano playing, Adrian singing the spiritual. Last one, in taking it out Adrian said they - Adrian and Will - should do it again. Definitely said Will ...Down by the Riverside. Here endeth today's lesson.

If you're inclined to believe Adrian, Rocky, his dog, likes to have a video call with Will. And why not?

You won't want to miss next week's session. Returning to Gun Hill Studios for a festive knees-up, guess who Adrian's got coming along? The one-and-only Liane Carroll! One o'clock, don't be late!
