In an earlier post I mentioned sax player Sammy Walker who enlivened the London scene in the 1950s playing with the bands of Tony Crombie and Dizzy Reece, This prompted Simon Spillett to send me this cutting showing Sammy on baritone at The Birdland Club in Gerrard St.
The Birdland Club later achieved fame as the place where Hendrix met Noel Redding in 1966 although, by then the club seems to have moved to Duke of York St.
The article, possibly from The Daily Sketch, was penned by Les Perrin who later became one of the big hitters as a publicist/press agent in the emerging rock and pop scene - The Rolling Stones being perhaps his most well-known collaboration although he handled the publicity for most visiting American stars such as Sinatra and Joni Mitchell. This in turn led me to a very interesting blog - Vinyl Memories.
Mainly pop but there's still a lot of jazz in there and I could spend all day checking out the posts and the memories. Interesting that Jeff Kruger who ran the Flamingo Club refers to Tony Kinsey as Tommy Kinsey!
