Bebop Spoken There

Charlie Musselwhite: "I used to see these posters in the windows of the [Chicago] blues clubs advertising Elmore James and Muddy Waters which knocked me out. I was making a note of the addresses and at night I'd go back and listen to the blues until 4-5 in the morning." - (Blues Matters! Aug/Sep 2021)

The Things They Say!

Hudson Music: Lance's "Bebop Spoken Here" is one of the heaviest and most influential jazz blogs in the UK.

The Strictly Smokin' Big Band included Be Bop Spoken Here (sic) in their 5 Favourite Jazz Blogs.

Album review: Judith & Dave O'Higgins - His 'n' Hers

Judith and Dave O’Higgins (tenor saxes); Graham Harvey (piano); Jeremy Brown (bass); Josh Morrison (drums).

Musical partnerships that are also romantic ones are not unusual. Rarer, are ones where the lovebirds play the  same instrument. My parents were both talented pianists and although my mother was by far the more accomplished player it was never an issue between them – who’s washing the dishes? was likely to be a more important matter than who  did what when playing a Bach or Beethoven Sonata.

Likewise, I’m sure the O’Higgins have found soulmates in each other and, although the blurb describes it as a swinging tough tenors face-off it is more of a mutual admiration society with both horns complementing (and complimenting) each other though I doubt if either of them are holding anything back – there’s no need to as both are up for it.

Two of the tracks are numbers by Dexter Gordon and they do him proud swinging in the manner of the great man himself. Another three tracks are dual compositions – possibly created over the breakfast table … “I think a D diminished over an augmented pass the ketchup darling …” whatever, wherever, they work well together as both players and composers. Judith is blowing on the left channel and Dave on the right however, as I’m currently unable to split channels on my present (temporary) system I’m unable to give positive identification as to which is which or who is whom! It doesn’t matter, they are both great players and, in the case of Dave, he plays pretty good for a man.

The trio are no less than what you would expect with such a dream duo out front.

The album is due to be released on vinyl on October 23. There is a launch scheduled for the 606 Club on October 10 – fingers crossed.

His ‘n’ Hers – recommend you make it Yours ‘n’ Mine.
