Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

New Century Ragtime Orchestra News.

(Press release)

Advance notice that our annual concert at Gateshead's Caedmon Hall is on Saturday 29 February at 7.30 pm, once again featuring Keith Nichols on piano, Nick Ward on drums, Caroline on vocals and presented by Steve Andrews (reeds).

Tyneside’s premier exponents of ragtime, hot dance music and classic jazz return to the Caedmon Hall for their annual concert, assisted by Mr Keith Nichols, master of ragtime and stride piano styles. Over the past 20 years, New Century Ragtime Orchestra has developed a reputation for musical authenticity and presentational mayhem from larger-than-life reed man and local hero, Steve Andrews. If you like ragtime, 1920s jazz and 1930s swing, this is a night not to miss!

The Caedmon Hall (within Gateshead Central Library) has free parking facilities, disabled access and a bar. The address is Prince Consort Road, Gateshead NE8 4LN.

Tickets (£15) are best ordered in advance from the band leader, Dave Kerr, on 0191 281 4011 or ragtimedavekerr@aol.com. They can be collected and paid for on the door.

We hope you can join us for another musical roller-coaster through the Jazz Age, from ragtime through hot dance to early swing - see you there!
Phil
