Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jazz on your 20's wireless

The BBC's jazz output contines into 2020 with an edition of Corey Mwamba's Freeness (Radio 3, midnight Saturday) featuring music from Barry Guy's 70th birthday concert. On Sunday afternoon it's Jazz Record Requests (Radio 3) presented, as usual, by Alyn Shipton and in the evening at 9:00pm multi instrumentalist James Morrison presents Top Brass (1/4) looking at the best of modern brass band music. The Swing and Big Band Show with Clare Teal follows at ten o'clock and at eleven Jools Holland includes an appearance by YolanDa Brown (all Radio 2).

In between all this from Auntie, be sure to go into the left hand column and click on to the late night show from Chicago presented by the super cool, laid-back Denny Farrell. This week, he's playing Phineas Newborn, I Can't Get Started; Charlie Byrd, While We're Young; Kay Starr, When a Woman Loves a Man; Ruby Braff, Easy Living; Barbara Carroll, Satin Doll; Buck Clayton/Frankie Laine, That Old Feeling (complete w. verse); Gerry Mulligan Quartet, The Song is You; Frank Sinatra/Tommy Dorsey/Dick Haymes, The Song is You; Scott Hamilton, Easy to Love; Art Pepper, Powder Puff; Sarah Vaughan, After Hours and Always; Steve Allen, I Thought About You.

Who needs Spotify Playlists when you can hear such quality stuff as this? Thank you, Denny Farrell.
