This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Gigs of the Year 2019 - Chris K

I'll keep this to a top seven, reflecting the limited number of gigs I get to compared with fellow correspondents.  But what a wealth of first rate jazz even within a Tees - Tyne - Lake District triangle!   

Leaving aside fabulous performances by Paul Edis / Sage YMP's Jambone and Dave Hignett's brilliant Tyne Valley Youth Big Band of course (I'm biased), my pick of the year looks like this:

Daniel Herskedal brought his stunning new brand of Scandi melodic beauty to Sage Two in March.

By contrast, Kamasi Washington rolled into Sage One in May and smashed it with his Fists of Fury.

I counted myself lucky to marvel at Tigran (Sage Two, January) and Kurt Rosenwinkel (Northern Rock Festival Hall, Sage, September).

The Zoe Gilby and Andy Champion Duo played a brilliant short set in Sage Two in May, and the Tori Freestone Trio lit up Newcastle Arts Centre in June.

Finally, I enjoyed a delightful January evening at Zeffirellis in Ambleside, with the exciting young band Wandering Monster.
