Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Will Earl: Postgraduate Recital @ The Music Studios, Newcastle University - August 20

Will Earl (drums) + Liam Mulpetre (guitar); Alex Brand (bass guitar); Grace Alexander (keyboards)

(Review by Russell)

Solo and Groove: Innovation in Contemporary Drumming Practices - that was William 'Will' Earl's chosen programme for his postgraduate recital. Following six years of study this was to be the Newcastle University music student's final performance. The Band Room in the subterranean depths of the Music Studios on Assembly Lane filled with family, fellow students and other interested parties as Earl's High Noon appointment drew ever closer.

Earl's performance programme notes and his choice of band mates for the occasion suggested there wouldn't be much of a 'jazz noise' and, sure enough, there wasn't! Throughout his recital (all fifty minutes of it) our examinee spoke eloquently about the material, his investigations and mode of practice. Musicians, bands and composers were name-checked ranging from Jojo Mayer and Marco Minnemann to Jeff Beck and Animals as Leaders. Prior to a note being played music department technicians offered the use of earplugs...your correspondent politely declined the offer! Performing solo and with his band Earl gave an impressive display of power drumming. Prog, metal, thrash (guitarist Liam Mulpetre shredding a la Van Halen), it would come as no surprise if Will Earl gets head-hunted by a mega-star outfit in need of a drummer.
