Swinging Down the Lane - Hand to Mouth on High Friar Lane - August 30

Lindsay Hannon (vocals); Bradley Johnston (guitar).
(Review by Lance)

Friday night in Newcastle - the sounds and the sights of the city. The police sirens, the ambulance sirens, the rumble of a subway train, the rattle of a taxi. The macho men in sleeveless shirts, the girls wearing even less, the incessant chatter on the mobile phones, the rock band practising for a demolition gig in Jericho.

In the midst of this potpourri of sound I pause, am I mistaken or is this Cole Porter I hear? It is! Its At Long Last Love.

High Friar Lane is a quaint thoroughfare that runs along the side of the Tyneside Cinema connecting Grey St. with Northumberland St. Tables are set out for those who like to eat and drink al fresco - it's almost Parisian - and there, providing the music, were Hand to Mouth.

The duo gig here yearly and provide an oasis of sanity. Lindsay is a class act who can take all kinds of liberty with the lyrics and still come out winning whilst Bradley is your man whether it be Django, Joe Pass or Metheny. With Hand to Mouth it's Joe Pass - remember those wonderful albums he did with Ella? well that's their bag.

Basin Street Blues; Dindi; Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You?; Bye Bye Blackbird; Tea For Two (with verse); I Wish I Were in Love Again (those quadruple rhymes - the conversation with the flying plates etc.); Mean to Me; All or Nothing at All; I Only Have Eyes For You; I Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues; One Note Samba; Stormy Weather; I Love Being Here With You

The revellers passed by, seemingly unaware of what was happening, but we knew... ...same time next year.
