The blurb proclaims "Stunning vocalist Patrice Jégou presents a veritable garden of delights on her second album If It Ain't Love."
Well, they would, wouldn't they? And, by and large, it's true. The problem is - if indeed there is a problem - the number of stunning vocalists is increasing daily. Even here in the backwater that is the northeast (or so they would have us believe), there are more than enough vocalists to challenge the world. Multiply that by every major city in all the jazz countries of the world and you realise how tough it is for emerging artists.
Jégou is as good as most and better than many. The tracks with vocal backing by Take 6 are a reminder of how effective such settings are. Meltones, Freshmen, Hi-Lo's, Double Six, Modernaires etc. proved this many years back and Jégou and Take 6 uphold the tradition admirably. The tracks with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra tell us the singer is equally at home with a big band whilst Estate, sung in French has some fine guitar playing by our old friend Larry Koonse.
To quote once more from the blurb: "Her sumptuous, velvety, and technically flawless voice embraces you like a warm blanket on a cold night". Damn! Why didn't I think of that?
Patrice is a swinger - listen to Lover Come Back to me - but she's also a sentimentalist as her take on Waltz For Debby, Losing You and others prove.
A veritable garden of delights indeed.
