CD Review: Doug MacDonald Quartet - Organisms

It seemed for a while that, with the passing of B3 legends such as McDuff, McGriff, Holmes and Smith, the organ had already gotten one foot out of the groove and into the grave. Fortunately, judging by the CDs I've been receiving recently, the venerable Hammond B3 is well and truly back in business. 

In a week's time (Feb. 26) Booker T is at Sage Gateshead clashing with local hero Gerry Richardson who's up-river at The Fox in Hexham on the same night. Brian Auger is still pedalling at home and abroad, whilst Joey DeFrancesco continues to dominate the polls in America and Ross Stanley and James Taylor keep the UK flag flying.

Despite the title, Organisms, It's guitarist MacDonald who leads from the front on this album but, naturally, the organ is ever present both soloing and comping with fingers and feet. There's also the added bonus of Bob Sheppard on tenor and Ben Scholz on drums.

It's a fine mix of standards (7) and originals (3) by MacDonald. Swingers and ballads. In the latter category Too Late Now is outstanding with the three soloists making the most of a wonderful tune credited on the sleeve as being by Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Land (sic!) It gets better - on MacDonald's website the credits go to Lana Lerner and Buston Lane! However, the music more than makes up for it!

Nina Never Knew/Indian Summer is a concise medley that showcases MacDonald flying solo. This is his 13th album and I'm tempted to seek out the other 12.

Highly recommended for those who like quality playing by four of the finest musicians around today.
