Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Friday's a Wonderful Night for a Moondance

Kathryn Frances Atack (piano/MD); Tony Chapman (vocals); Dave Beston (guitar); Nick Polito (drums); Steve Fardoe (sax/clarinet); Allan Peat (double bass).
(Info supplied by Allan Peat).

Moondance, named after the Van Morrison classic, is a six-piece swing band featuring the players listed above. Their repertoire includes such popular standards as The Lady is a Tramp, Fly me to the Moon, All of Me, Strangers in the Night, Autumn Leaves, Summertime, Mack the Knife, My Way, King of The Swingers etc.

Formed over the summer and playing quarterly at The Little Theatre in Cleadon near Sunderland, they are looking for other gigs in 2019. Some members of the ensemble also perform and direct plays at the theatre whose availability makes for a great rehearsal place for them, as well as being a nice venue to put on a show that’s 100% Moondance.

The theatre seats about 60/70 in a cabaret setting. The band's two shows this weekend will include the above numbers as well as some of the seasonal classics. Saturday night is sold out but there are still tickets for Friday‘s performance.
