Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Music is nature's gift to man. It's the only religion. We're living in a terrible era, but what a beautiful thing music is. Look how it brings us together like religion is supposed to; and with no language barriers.'' (Jazzwise September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Identity Parade

This photo is of a session that took place at the Rising Sun pub, Wallsend, in April 1981.
Pictureed (left to right) are: Ian Stronach (guitar); Tony Coe (looking out of the window); John Stevens (drums); unknown trumpet and bass guitar; Ian Carr (flugel); Unknown keyboard player.
John Etheridge was present (guitar headstock to the left of the picture) also Nigel and Germaine Stanger and, no doubt, others.
Can anyone help me identify the three unknowns and how they came to be playing at the Rising Sun?
Lance.

That was the evening gig held to complement a series of jazz workshops held in Newcastle that year Ian S was at that time studying music and was actually one of the workshop attendees and caught the attention of John Etheridge and was asked to play. The bass player was Lewis Evans another local musician studying music at the time. The keyboard player was Michael Garrick.

Just came across this....... knew Ian Stronach well in the mid to late 70’s. A regular at the Glebe Folk and Blues club and jam sessions at the Derry in Sunderland. Even as a teenager he was the most amazing guitarist and totally self taught. Native of Ryhope. Great lad. Lost contact in the mid 80’s.
