Bebop Spoken There

Van Morrison: ''Basically, I'm coming from jazz. Not pop, not rock, not what's commercial. That's where I started, and that's still where I am. I feel the same as I did when I was listening to Louis Armstrong, Lead Belly, Jelly Roll Morton''. (The Northern Echo, 12 June 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview - SSBB & Scarlet Street @ Hoochie Coochie - Sunday March 19.

(Preview by Kath Gowland)
Tonight, Thursday, is the penultimate reheasal for the SSBB and Scarlet Street, so I thought I would pop in for a listen, and to give the readers of BSH a bit of a heads up on the forthcoming event at Hoochie Coochie this SundayStrike Up The Band what a gig this will be!

So what can you expect this coming Sunday….
A Pandora’s Box of Delights for a discerning audience…. Military precision drumming from the fabulous Dave McKeague driving the rhythm section, occasional deps and the usual suspects front-lining the horn section.  The delightful, exquisite, Alice Grace, who, having had a few days of silence (no voice at all!) is once again in fine voice and of course the soulful sounds of the one and only… Freeze.
In addition to this we also have a bundle of delight, (and hopefully not a bundle of joy… yet - Jen’s baby is due in just 5 weeks) from the spectacular Scarlet Street, delicious harmonies, and sweet treats that took me back to the musical films of my childhood reminders of the Glenn Miller Story and wartime numbers from the Andrews Sisters… I shan’t be a bad apple and spoil it for you, although at the end of International Science Week maybe a vague reference to Newton’s Law of Gravity isn’t out of place… but honestly… I  just can’t wait! Oh yeah… and a couple of surprises too!
So if you want three fabulous sets of magnificent Big Band Music to dance along to … about 30 tunes… with incredible vocals interspersed with a few new numbers from the big band then you really do not want to miss this one!  Be there or be square!
Kath
