It was billed as being led by Steve Glendinning but Steve was elsewhere so it was Mark Williams in the hot seat.
Not that I was complaining. Mark, Paul (Grainger) and Russ set the bar quite high with Solar; Time Remembered and My Romance. A good start.
It takes a brave guitarist to follow Mark Williams but Mike Smith made a valiant effort with some Ellington. Brandishing a Squier Telecaster he gave us a rather ponderous In a Sentimental Mood and Take the A Train that somehow had a Chet Atkins country feel to it - nice one.
Vince Webb occupied the piano stool for the rest of the evening. A very welcome addition to the Newcastle scene. Young Matt Mackellar is fast becoming a veteran, whilst Ian Forbes has long been a veteran. Both made major contributions to the evening as did Dave McKeague later and Russ Morgan earlier.
Four great drummers in one night!
John Pope on bass didn't do any harm either!
Alex Moniakis played good guitar on West Coast Blues then the horns moved in. Forbes (Don), Paul (Gowland) and David (Gray) played Softly as in a Morning Sunrise. It wasn't softly but nor was it morning so I wasn't Moanin' although they were soon after - they were on fire although Webb's solo on the Bobby Timmons' classic was surprisingly delicate.
Other numbers included There Will Never be Another You, Oleo and 27 - the latter being, of course, my bus which beckoned.
Another great night.

When I remarked that Steve Glendinning was billed, Mark replied, "I'll get my head shaved then I'll be able to play like Steve" - Irish humour, you can't beat it!
